Free Nintendo Wii

I have always thought of those “free nintendo!” and “free ipod” things were all scams.  And I’m still a little skeptical.   But I recently started thinking about it a bit more.  There is a lot of money in advertising and online marketing, and what do these sites do? They force people to sign up for trials, view their products, and refer their friends to do the same, just to get the prize. And then there are those who don’t sign up, but still go to the web page and click around to see what it’s about.  I can imagine that they earn enough money from this to more than compensate for the prizes that they give out.

I also saw tons of video’s on youtube about this claiming that it’s legit, citing CNN, BBC, etc as sources.

Check out this video on youtube

So… Why not try it and see if it is real??  I signed up, so we’ll see how it goes.  You need to sign up/complete an offer with one of their advertisers, and then refer 6 people to do the same.  I chose to go with zip.ca, which is a 2 week free trial of movie rentals.  I have no intention of keeping it and plan on canceling it a couple days before the 2 weeks are up.  Now, I just have to refer 6 people, and then I should get my Nintendo Wii in the mail.

If you’d like to try it too, we could find out if this is real or not. Go get your free Nintendo Wii!!

This could be a good way to get prizes for blog contests that could increase your traffic to your blog.

Akismet Spam update

Five days after setting up and running Akismet Spam, I am pretty much spam free. I did get one spam comment, but that’s ok, I can deal with that. According to the Akismet plugin, it has stopped 368 spam comments since I activated it.

Best of all, it does all this in the background, without making my readers decipher a Captcha image every time they want to comment.

Broken Wrists Update…

As I mentioned in an earlier post, and in my post about my webpage, I broke both my wrists in September.  I have gotten one free, but one is still in it’s cast.

My left wrist was a small hairline fracture, so it had no problems healing within the six week period.  I’m pretty much back to normal, with no pain and very little strength lost.  It has been a pretty smooth recovery.

My right wrist on the other hand, has been a different story.  I broke the Scaphoid Bone.
 Who gets this fracture?

In adolescents and young adults, fracture of this bone is the most common fracture around the wrist. Men are ten times more likely to fracture this bone than women. Although the bone is small, it takes a lot to break it. Oddly enough, twice as much force is required to

'The end of an era' at UBC

It’s something that I didn’t notice straight away, and probably because I don’t use them. But there are some new vending machines at UBC. For the past 12 years the only vending machines on the UBC Campus have been owned by Coca-Cola. And now that their contract is up, a number of Pepsi vending machines have arrived.

The deal with Coca-Cola, inked in 1995, was the first of its kind in Canada, and guaranteed $8.5 million to the university over 10 years in exchange for exclusivity. In 2005, the exclusive contract was extended another Continue reading

Spam problem solved…

I mentioned a few days ago, that I had an increased spam. I never used to have this problem, and after upgrading my site, I was getting 20-30 spam comments a day. Damien suggested reCAPTCHA, which is a program that can tell whether its user is a human or a computer by using captcha images. I installed it, and it worked. However, I didn’t really like it. It didn’t integrate into my site very well, was below all the comment forms, and was therefore easy to miss. And, when you did miss it, or get the words wrong, it deleted your comment that you had just written.

I began to look for other means for dealing with the comment spam. And found that I had really just had a big blond moment. Why I never got spam before was simply because Continue reading

Making Money Online – Facebook Style

I’ve been exploring the idea of trying to monetize my facebook account recently.  The idea is a good one, and many have done it, so why don’t I??

An Article on CNN Money about the Facebook Economy

I think that one of the reasons I haven’t gotten into this yet is lack of time.  I am full time in school, and trying to finish up my degree this year.  Another reason is I don’t feel confident that I could really make an application.  I’m not a programmer, and all that I know is just from surfing the internet.  And I know that I could learn, but again, its the time thing.  Learning how would take time, which is hard to come by.

Monetizing Facebook

All that being said, I do want to look into this, and hope I will make time for it.

iPhone

I had the pleasure of chatting with someone today, and he decided to grab my phone number, and he pulls out an iPhone. I was quite excited, because this was the first iPhone that I had seen. He showed me how it works, what it was capable of doing, and I must admit, it is quite a cool phone!! I’d love to have one, but to be completely honest, I’d probably break it way to quickly for it to be worth the money. Especially because of the touch screen. I’m notoriously hard on my phones, and I’ve cracked screens and dented them, with them usually only lasting me a year. If you are unfamiliar with the iPhone, here is a good video that shows what it is capable of.

Technical problems aren’t allowing me to embed the video, so please watch it here.

The iPhone is not available in Canada, but as always, Continue reading

Increased Spam

Recently I started being active in the blogging world again, and one thing has jumped out at me.  Spam!!  Since I have updated my blog, I have been getting tons of Spam comments on my posts… new and old posts…  I have averaged just over 15 spam comments a day for the last week. Ranging from cheap Viagra, and other prescription drugs, to replica watches.  Several months ago, when I used to be even more active in the blogging world, I never got anywhere near as much spam as this.  I guess the times have changed.
