Mortgage vs. Renting in Vancouver

A quick look into the rental market in Vancouver, and its scary. A small place, about 700-800 square feet will run you $100-1200 a month easily. A nicer place, 2 bedroom, could be around $1600-1800.

Right now it is a buyers market here in Vancouver. With low mortgage rates, and housing prices today, a mortgage won’t run you much more than renting. The mortgage on a 1 bedroom place about 600-700 square feet costing about $200,000-250,000 will be about $1200-1400 a month. Not bad considering you are building up your own equity and not filling someone elses pocket!

Housing Market in Vancouver

The housing market in Vancouver has dropped over the past year. In some cases as much as 20%! That, combined with low interest rates, it seems to be the perfect time for 1st time buyers to start looking. I am in that situation right now. I am looking and will be meeting with a mortgage broker and hope to get into the housing market within the next year.

Wish me luck, and I will share with you all my new learnings and invite you to share with me!

What have I done in the past year

What have I done in the past year?

Well, as I have mentioned, I graduated in May with my degree in Music. Immediately following that, I got hired as the Customer Assurance Manager of Caffe Umbria Canada. A smaller coffee roasting company. I really enjoyed this job, however, there were some aspects of the job I didn’t like and thought I could further myself elsewhere. I left this job after 4 months and started my Plumbing and Heating Apprentice in September. I quite enjoyed this, however the hours were long, and I didn’t enjoy the fact that jobs always took longer than they should have and I never got off work at a decent time. I did however enjoy the work and loved using my hands and building things. I would have stayed in this for longer, but perhaps a good thing happened when the economy went down and left our business lacking. I had less and less work from the company I was with so I started seeking other work. I am now a Valet Driver for a hotel downtown. This job has grown into a full time job and I have been promoted to Site Supervisor. I get to pick my hours, and as of right now I am earning the equivalent of what I was earning in Plumbing and Heating, but with much less hours. As summer picks up and hotel business picks up, I expect my tips to increase and it should be a fairly decent paying job considering its just parking cars.

This, however is not my career choice by any means, but it is bringing in money for the time being. I am looking into possible career choices right now.

Who reads my blog…

I have made several posts saying that I will come back and start blogging, I never have. I am never feeling inspired to write about something. However, my little firestats app tells me that there are page views everyday. Who is visiting my blog?

I have decided that I don’t really want to care about what I write about, or who reads it, and I am going to make this a page where I can share my thoughts of the moment, be it to nobody, or lots of people, whoever comes across it on the web.

School's Over

School’s over for another year. No. Wait. School’s over, and this was my last year! I have now completed my Bachelors Degree :D In what? you ask? Piano Performance.

What can you do with a degree in piano performance?

  • Teach piano.
  • Perform
  • Work as a collaborative pianist.

But do I want to do any of these? No. I think I may go insane teaching piano day in and day out, so I may teach a few students on the side, but not as a full job. Will I perform? It’s fun, but it takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and the biggest part is, luck, being at the right place at the right time, having the right person hear you play and then get you gigs. Also, I really don’t have the dedication to practice the 8-10 hours a day to be a top performer. This leaves one option left. Collaborative pianist, the world of the collaborative pianist is growing rapidly right now, but again, I’m not sure I have the dedication to learn and practice all that music.

So, why did I do my degree?? Well, after high school, I didn’t know what to study, I loved music, and thought why not continue with piano? I had completed a few diplomas, and the next level I could move on to was a bachelors degree. So off I went. 3 years into it, I began to think more about my career options, and realized that music was not what I wanted to be in, however, I had gone far enough, that I decided to stick it out and complete it.

That is now completed, and can now get on with life, which brings me great excitement :D

Summer is on it's way?

I have been getting quite excited about summer recently.  Summer is probably my favorite season, and I’m stoked for this summer.

For me, summer is a time of play and good times.  I love water sports, love camping, and I love the warm weather and the sun. Sure, I love snow, I’m an avid snowboarder, and I do enjoy other winter sports.  But there is something about the summer that is just so much better.  I like the fact that in the evening, you can just go for a walk without freezing off your backside.

Long story short, I’m getting really excited about summer!!  The funny part is, it snowed in Vancouver yesterday!  It’s almost April and it’s cold enough that snow can fall.  Needless to say, the weather confuses me, but I still dream of summer, which seems closer and closer each day.  But maybe that’s just in my mind, as I think about it too often.
